A SIMPLE GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUPPORT

Not sure where to start? Begin here.

Every pregnancy is different.

This page will help you understand what kind of support will serve you best — without pressure, overwhelm, or guesswork.

If you’re feeling unsure, you’re not alone

Most parents arrive here with questions like:

  • Do I need antenatal classes or private sessions?
  • Is a doula necessary — or optional?
  • What support actually makes a difference after birth?
  • How do I prepare without overdoing it?

At Four Trimesters, we don’t believe in selling you everything. We believe in helping you start with what matters most — and layering support only if and when it’s genuinely useful.

Start with antenatal preparation

For almost every family, antenatal education is the foundation. It’s where you:

  • Understand how birth works — physically and hormonally
  • Learn how mindset, fear, and expectations influence labour
  • Prepare your body through movement, positioning, and breath
  • Think through choices calmly, without being locked into a rigid “plan”
  • Lay the groundwork for breastfeeding and early postpartum

Even parents planning a caesarean benefit deeply from this preparation.

This is where we recommend starting.

Choosing the right antenatal format

Different formats serve different needs. Here’s how to choose without overthinking.

Group Antenatal
Classes

Right for you if:

  • You want the strongest, most complete foundation
  • You value shared learning and partner involvement
  • You’re comfortable learning alongside other couples
  • You want preparation for birth and the fourth trimester

This is our recommended starting point for most parents.

Private Antenatal
Sessions

Right for you if:

  • You are highly anxious or time-constrained
  • You travel frequently or have scheduling limitations
  • You are a second-time (or more) parent wanting focused refinement
  • You prefer one-to-one discussion and personalised pacing

Private sessions work best as a supplement, or when group classes aren’t feasible.

Online Antenatal
Classes

Right for you if:

  • You are overseas or unable to attend in person
  • You prefer self-paced learning
  • You understand this requires more self-discipline and initiative

Online learning offers knowledge — but not embodied practice.

Do I need a birth doula?

Some parents want education only. Others want continuity of care — someone who knows them before labour begins and supports them through birth and early breastfeeding.

BIRTH DOULA SUPPORT MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU IF:

  • You want calm, experienced presence during labour
  • You value continuity from pregnancy through early postpartum
  • You are planning a drug-free birth, waterbirth, homebirth, or VBAC
  • You want strong breastfeeding outcomes after birth
Doula support is never required — and is not recommended without antenatal preparation first.
What about postpartum and breastfeeding support?

In Singapore, “postpartum doula” support looks different from overseas.

At Four Trimesters, postnatal care focuses on:

  • Breastfeeding support
  • Early recovery and transition home
  • Helping parents feel confident — not dependent

This support is available:

  • As part of birth doula care
  • Or as standalone breastfeeding support when needed
You don’t need to decide this now. Most parents choose postnatal support after birth, once they understand their needs.

OPTIONAL SUPPORT

Placenta encapsulation

Placenta encapsulation is an optional service some parents choose to support recovery, energy levels, and replenishment after birth.

This service is independent of antenatal or doula support and can be booked separately.

Is this approach right for you?

This approach may suit you if:

  • You want clarity, not fear-based advice
  • You value preparation over last-minute decisions
  • You respect both physiology and medical care
  • You prefer calm, experienced guidance
  • You don’t want to be sold things you don’t need
